A word about moralising
Response styles are routinely written about as though they were failures of character or attention. They are not. Acquiescence and extreme responding vary systematically between cultures and with education; midpoint responding may be caution, ambivalence or items that genuinely do not apply; and an apparently careless pattern can be produced by fatigue, pain, or a badly built form met with a screen reader. This tool flags patterns and refuses to attribute motives.

- Acquiescence
- Tending to agree, more or less whatever the item says.
- Extreme and midpoint responding
- Preferring the ends of the scale, or preferring the middle of it, independently of the content of the items.
- Straight-lining
- Giving the same answer to every item.
- Impression management
- Answering so as to present a particular picture. A pattern in the data can show that this is possible; it cannot show that it happened.
- Balanced keying
- Writing a scale with some items reversed, so that agreeing with everything no longer produces a high score.

The total score is not the response
Seven people with the same true standing produce seven different totals, and the differences have nothing to do with the trait. A questionnaire measures the trait plus how the person uses a rating scale, and the second part does not disappear because it was not intended.
Balanced keying is the cheapest fix available
Acquiescence is the clearest case. Agreeing with an item and with its opposite cancels in the recoded total, so a balanced scale largely neutralises it. Remove the reverse-worded items and acquiescence becomes arithmetically indistinguishable from a high score. The cost is real — reverse items are harder to understand, and often form their own method factor — but the alternative is a score that confounds agreement with the trait.
Detectable is not the same as diagnosable
Straight-lining, extreme responding and midpoint responding are all visible in the data. Why any particular person produced them is not. The same grid can come from carelessness, from a genuine trait, from a culturally normal way of using scales, from fatigue or pain, from someone navigating a badly built form with assistive technology, or from a person answering honestly about a life in which the items simply do not apply.
Which is why screening decisions need to be stated as decisions
Removing cases on the basis of response patterns is a defensible data-quality choice when it is pre-specified, applied blind to the hypothesis, and reported. It stops being defensible when it is reported as a judgement about the people whose data were removed — and the difference between those two things is entirely in how it is described.
